I spent last weekend in New York City. Depending on your viewpoint, I was either soaking up the sights and sounds or being continuously assaulted by them. One arcane observation; however, was that everyone who had a cell phone in their hand was carrying an iPhone.
Really.
The bartender at a blues club had her iPhone plugged in and well hidden behind a condiment caddy. She checked for messages twice while I was sitting at the bar.
The Russian peddle-bike tour guide in central park asked if he could take my picture. I handed him my iPhone asking, "Do you know how to work this?" He smiled and pulled out his iPhone to show me.
A school-aged boy walking next to me in Times Square was iPhoning a friend about the cricket he just ate at the wax museum.
This appears to be a generational thing though. No middle-aged New Yorkers or visitors were observed packing their digital weapon. However, I doubt it will be long before we see wider spread adoption in all markets. I could go on but the message is clear. Plan for and design your mobile messaging around the iPhone, or any other smartphone for that matter.
Do you have an app for that?
