I recently read an article on B2B Online that rings true today for email marketers. While I have been using email marketing as long as it has been around and have heard these tips over and over, they serve as an excellent reminder that sticking to some of the basic best practices will make your email marketing efforts more effective in the long run.
In the article, Curtis Jackson (Senior VP-Brand Strategy at Quell Group, www.quell.com) outlines the Top Ten Email Marketing Mistakes. Here is a brief overview of his article and the Top 10 list, click here to read more...
E-mail marketing has almost become too easy to execute, given the proliferation of bulk-e-mail providers. It's critical for organizations to be strategic in this tactic and avoid these common mistakes:
1) Having no strategy.
2) Using an outdated list.
3) Focusing on non-relevant content.
4) Missing an opportunity in your top-line message.
5) Being too text- or graphic-heavy.
6) Being “salesy.”
7) Forgetting to drive your Web traffic.
8) Testing only on one browser or operating system.
9) Sending at the wrong time.
10) Ignoring metrics.

I know many of these tips seem like common sense and ingrained in our thinking, but failing to use them could be the difference between email success and failure. Make sure that you are not succumbing to one of these common mistakes that email marketers make. When marketers are creating their campaigns in other mediums, they plan extensively, pore over content, create strong calls-to-action, test their messaging, time it to hit just right and track every step of the way. Apply this same process to your email marketing strategy and you are sure to see results that will have a much greater impact to your entire marketing bottom line.
